“但是生活没有新变化以前，你同意罢？”

她看见一头棕色的猎犬从小径里跑出来，提着鼻子向他们望着，轻轻吠着。一个带着枪的人，迈着大步轻快地跟着猎犬，向他们走来，仿佛要攻击他们。但是他突然站住了，向他们行了一个礼，然后转头下山了。这是新来的守猎人，但他把康妮吓了一跳，因为他出现得这样的突然。

这人穿着深绿色的线绒衣，长统橡胶鞋……老式的样子，红润的脸孔，红的髭须，和冷淡的眼睛。他正迅速地向山下走去。

“梅乐士！”克利福喊到。

那人轻快地回转了身，行了个兵士的礼。

“你可以把我的车子转过来，发动着吗？这样比较好走。”克利福说。

那人马上把枪挂在肩上，用那种同样奇异的动作走了上来。他中等的身材，有点消瘦，沉默寡言，他一点也没看康妮，只望着车子。

“康妮，这是新来的守猎人，叫梅乐士。你还没有和太太说过吧，梅乐士？”

“I think you’re right Clifford. And as far as I can see I agree with you. Only life may turn quite a new face on it all.”

“but until life turns a new face on it all. You do agree? ”

“oh yes! I think I do, really.”

She was watching a brown spaniel (西班牙猎犬)that had run out of a sidepath, and was looking toward them with lifted nose, making a soft, fluffy (毛茸茸的)bark（吠叫声）. A man with as if about to attack them; then stopped instead, saluted, and was turning down hill. It was only the new gamekeeper, but he had frightened Connie, he seemed to emerged with such a swift menace(威胁).

He was a man in dark green velveteens（平绒） and gaiters(鞋罩) …the old style, with a red face and red moustache and distant（远的，冷淡的） eyes. He was going quickly down hill.

“Mellors!” called Clifford.

The man faced lightly round, and saluted with a quick little gesture, a soldier!

“Will you turn the chair round and get it started? That makes it easier,” said Clifford.

The man at once slung(使吊起) his gun over his shoulder, and came forward with the same curious swift. He was moderately（适中的） tall and lean（倾斜，瘦的）, and was silent. He did not look at Connie at all, only at the chair.

“Connie, this is the new gamekeeper, Mellors. You haven’t spoken to her ladyship yet, Mellors?” (waiting for going on)
